judo - a little bit of history

Judo is a Japanese Martial Art. Judo is a style, or school of Jujitsu. Jujitsu is a martial art with a long history in Japan and is essentially the empty handed combat of the Samurai warrior.

In 1882, at the age of 22, Jigoro Kano opened his own school in Tokio named KODOKAN.  jig

“Kodo” means “proclaiming the truth” and “Kan” means “gathering”. Teaching came naturally to Jigoro and in the name of his school he mentioned his goal.

He taught Jujitsu according to his own beliefs, which was based on the wisdom of his teachers but yet again very different. Full of energy and with a strong will he pursued his eagerness to learn new things.

Sometimes traveling for days visiting other teachers he learned the secrets from other Jujitsu schools and improve his own techniques. In the end Jigoro Kano reached a height unheard of in Judo in those days.

Judo is often translated as “Gentle Way”,but this is an overly simplistic translation and there is really much more to it.

Judo is characterized by its dynamic throws, immobilization techniques, joint locks, strangulation techniques and to a lesser degree punches and kicks. This all sounds pretty dangerous and it is except that there are procedures and rules to follow reducing the risk of practice to a low level consistent with "having to go to work or school tomorrow." The injury rate and severity is equivalent to playing volleyball or basketball.

FINALLY

Judo would be a good choice for most children because it is safe and fun. Judo training has many forms for different interests. Some students train for competition by sparring and entering the many tournaments that are available. Other students study the traditional art and forms of Judo. Other students train for self-defence, and yet other students do Judo for fun. Black belts are expected to learn all of these aspects of Judo. Because Judo originated in modern times it is organized like other major sports with one international governing body, the International Judo Federation (IJF).
